Group exhibit
SRO GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Amy Mahnick, Marcy Rosewater and Scott Williams, Tell the Truth But Tell it Slant.
1129
Tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
-Emily Dickinson
Our title is taken from Emily Dickinson’s poem 1129. The poem makes the assumption that the poet knows the truth, but makes an active choice to hold it back, to approach it with a slant. These three painters, Mahnick, Rosewater and Williams, also have a circuitous way of telling a truth. As Dickinson’s poem is not told in an A to B sort of way, these artists explore the power of observational painting and how best to proceed to tell it.
In these painters’ circuitous paths to their truth, they return to their same themes again and again, forming different perspectives, with different metaphors, coming to different conclusions. We witness their discovery; the mundane becomes rich in metaphor.
Each particular point of view in the show is a meditation within the intersection of fact and fiction.
Mahnick has an upcoming exhibit at the Painting Center, Project Room in 2018.
She recently exhibited work in Summer Invitational, invited by Lizbeth Mitty, David and Schweitzer, Brooklyn, Women Painting, curated by Michelle Weinberg and Sarah Michelle Rupert, Miami Dade College, Miami FL. and Bushwick Tales, curated by Etty Yaniv, Venus Knitting Space, Brooklyn.
Williams’ work has recently been featured at Valentine Gallery, Ridgewood, Inside Out, Art 101 Gallery, Brooklyn and Small Works, Mishkin Gallery, Baruch College, NY. In 2014 Williams’ paintings were exhibited in a solo show, Chance, Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn.
Rosewater was the recipient of the Golden Foundation Fellowship and a resident at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, both in 2017. She currently is in a two person show, IN / Out, with Kate Teale at Studio 10 in Bushwick and this Fall her work will be included in Art from the Boros at Denise Bibro Fine Art, Chelsea. She was recognized at this year’s Bushwick Open Studios by both Hyperallergic and Two Coats of Paint.
